This & That

Happy Valentine's Day! We had a wonderful lunch at Tanque Verde Guest Ranch to celebrate my mom's birthday...it was very relaxing as Kaia stayed home with sitter Jen to nap. Even got to relax by the pool for awhile. (If you haven't been here for lunch, you need to go. Awesome ranch, one of the best buffets (mmmm...dessert table) out there!)

After Kaia's nap, we headed to The Children's Museum, Jason's Deli for a salad, then to Elements church service. It sounds like we did a lot today, and you might be thinking that we had a ton of energy. But truth is D and I have been pretty sleepy all day. Getting out the house is energizing for both of us and Kaia had a blast too. :)

My friend Jessie has now visited the top 10 restaurants in Seattle. I went to check out Tucson's top 10. I was born and raised here and have not been to all of the top 10. We'll have to see what we can do to fix that - anyone want to go out? (I need to hit 2, 3, 8, & 9) Number 1 is Cafe Poca Cosa which is a favorite of mine, so I feel like I can trust this list.:)

Oh, and David and I have decided each year to celebrate Valentine's Day on the weekend closest to the 26th of February (since our anniversary is on May 26th). Just want to avoid the crowds, limited menus and expensive flowers...and be a little different. Hmmm...maybe we'll hit #2 (the restaurant, that is) that weekend. :)

Hope you had a wonderful weekend (& that you get tomorrow (Pres Day) off!).

Harvest Festival

Last night, Kaia and I headed to a Harvest Festival at Christ Community. My parents were running a booth and Lisa, SQ, Rachel, Gideon, and a couple thousand people joined us for some free fun, food and music (including cotton candy, a fave of mine!).
Kaia went as an angel and was in a festive mood. They had an Army jazz band out from Ft. Huachuca, and Kaia LOVED their music. She danced and danced and had a nice little following. Even after the dance session, people were pointing her out to friends and family as they passed by. Thanks to CCC for the well-organized festival and all the candy that was sent home with Kaia...darn that she can't eat all of it yet...guess I can help some. :)
It was hard narrowing down these angel pictures taken at home before we headed out for the evening...

Unkey Monkey

"Unkey Monkey" is what Kaia will likely grow up to call her Uncle Michael. He has a wonderful way of making kids laugh and have the time of their lives. Kaia has come to expect fun times with her Unkey Monkey. Don't believe me, check out this video featuring Unkey himself and my sister's laughter in the background...enjoy!

Free water fun

Today, Lisa, the kids, my parents and I headed in search of an oasis, of sorts. Brandi Fenton Memorial Park (River & Alvernon) was rumored to have a splash park! We found a huge park complete with grassy fields, covered playgrounds, a dog park, and a splash park...an amazingly fun splash park...certainly comparable to the little kids' area at most water parks. There were just a couple other tots running around...we had a marvelous time.

Dancing Queens

I think it's safe to say that Kaia and her cousin Rachel dance everyday, whether they're together (clearly optimal) or solo.

Staying Cool

I stole my friend Jessie's post title. She lives in Seattle, and it's been abnormally hot there...we're talking all-time record! Because the summer's are so mild, most people don't have AC. Oh, and did I mention that she's due in a few weeks?! Love you Jessie...hope Seattle's getting back to its gorgeous weather. (Oh, and btw, she has the BEST recipe blog evah!)

Well, it's hot here too, but no surprise. We, with kids, are always looking for fun things to do with the kidos indoors. David, Lisa and I headed to the Tucson Children's Museum on Sunday and again on Wednesday morning. Wow, was it fun!! Kaia (15 mos.), Rachel (2 yrs.) and Gideon (4 yrs.) had a blast and could've stayed much, much longer! We got a great deal on a 4 month membership, and Lisa and I plan on heading out there at least once a week for the rest of this hot period. The museum, swimming, playground at the mall, and chilling at home, and going outside very early or late in the day ought to get us through the rest of the summer. :)

Banquets and Babysitting

Tonight was special for a couple of reasons. We were celebrating Eileen's Dad's 35 years of working at TMC hospital AND due to the celebration, we were leaving our little Kaia with someone we weren't related to for the first time.

The day started off with us hanging with David's brother Paul's family. We ate some brunch and had some good conversation. We had a great time, but the downfall was that Kaia enjoyed herself so much that she missed a nap and threw her schedule off. David was really worried about Kaia being difficult for Melissa, the babysitter that Eileen knew. However, Eileen was focused and did a good job of getting Kaia and Melissa situated and getting us out the door.

The TMC Banquet was held at La Paloma. It was a formal event and it gave us a chance to dress up and go on a nice date. It was an impressive event that honored hundreds of individuals for their service at TMC. It was really organized well and the food was delicious. Eileen's Dad, Dennis, has been an integral part of the pharmacy at TMC and has helped to create an environment that people love to work in. It was great that we were all able to be there to celebrate him. As an added bonus, our good friends Chris and Melissa were there. Melissa was being honored for her 10th year of nursing at TMC. The night ended with a live band and dancing. The music selections weren't the best, but it was still so enjoyable to dance.

We arrived back home, expecting to find a number of various situations that we had thought up: including lots of crying and gnashing of teeth (especially since Kaia basically hates the bottle). Fortunately, we found the house to be silent when we entered. Melissa was doing some homework and Kaia was sound asleep! It was such good news. What an answer to prayer.

Kaia's Arrival

My contractions became regular at about 10 pm on Sunday night (4.20.08). We started timing and packing and I rested a little bit. They were about 6-7 minutes apart at this time. Earlier at small group at the LePeau's I felt like I had cramping. We called the doctor later that night (midnight?) and she said to go ahead and go to the hospital. I thought my water might have broken earlier when I was swimming...

We went to TMC, back to a triage room where they check to see if it was amniotic fluid (it wasn't) and monitored my blood pressure and contractions and baby's heart beat. I was a 2 and 80% effaced (up from 1/20 a week before). We hung out then were told to walk around the hospital for 2 hours. This didn't sound too appealing since it was 2:45 am and I was still having contractions. Dave was great... he either held me from behind and massaged my hips or I hugged him from the front. The halls were pretty empty... basically did 2 rounds with some sitting breaks. D' started to get really tired. :)

They ended up sending us back home since I was still only a 2/80. Our nurse, Lynne, told us about her daughter who was looking for a PE teacher job and how hard that was. Lynne told us to come back when the contractions were much more intense - she guessed 12-24 hours. We went home, ate and tried to rest. I took a sleeping pill at TMC but didn't really sleep due to contractions, but these 6 hours are a little hazy for me... know I took a bath at one point. Then D' and I got up, watched some TV and were able to rest a bit more between contractions - napping for 3-4 minutes never felt so good. Around 5:30 pm we went back to the hospital, to triage. I was a 3 and 90%... still progressing slowly.

Thankfully they were eventually able to get us a L&D room! Lisa met us down there in triage. Once in L&D (around 7) it didn't take too long to get an epidural (maybe 8 pm). Dr. Horvath did a phenomenal job putting it in. Katie, our nurse, was good... she really, really warmed up when she heard I taught the head nurse's kids, Terry and Stephanie Place. So, my parents and Uncle Mark and Aunt Karen came to say hi.

Lisa went home to rest and eventually David and I slept too... so nice. They were going to start me on pitocin, but my contractions sped up once on the epidural...nice & relaxed! I was an 8 and my water broke when Katie checked me at 12:30 am. Earlier, Lynne had guessed 5:30 am for d-time. She was pretty darn close. Maybe around 4 (??) we called Lisa to come back.... SQ had been on call and been up all night (poor guy) and had to deal with the kidos in the morning. He'd also had a really tough Monday with his team out and stupid boss requests. Thanks SQ for sharing Lisa with us.

Lisa got there and it wasn't long until I started pushing with Dave, Lisa and Katie. I did 3 pushes (10 secs each) with each contraction. Awhile later Dr. Laird showed up and soon realized that my contractions weren't helping a ton to push out the baby. She suggested starting pitocin and I said "Ok!". I sat out a couple contractions from pushing so she could see how much they helped. She needed to turn the head slightly. As we were waiting, she told stories of women pushing for hours (D' didn't think that her stories were cool). Anyway after sitting out a couple, I felt like pushing and she said I could. Two more pushes and Kaia was out - I was shocked!!

No idea I was that close. They had just started the pitocin... don't think it had kicked in a ton, but it helped my uterus contract afterwards. I don't remember the placenta being delivered. I did have a 2nd degree tear, so she put in a few stitches (just felt tugs) and I remember the nurse "massaging" my uterus for clots... agh. D' wanted to hold Kaia, but I wouldn't let him... if I had to feel that, I at least wanted Kaia in my arms. :)

Kaia's color quickly changed from a little blue (normal) to healthy and pink. Dave cut the umbilical cord and took lots of pics and put on her first diaper. We all took turns holding her and calling family. What a relief to have our perfect little girl here... 6 pounds, 12 ounces, 18.5 inches - Tuesday 4.22.08 @ 4:50 am!
